EU: Computer illustration or digital illustration is the use of digital tools to produce images under the direct manipulation of the artist, usually through a pointing device such as a tablet or a mouse.
EQ: How can I make a digital Illustration using Illustrator?
Assignment: Design your own sugar skull using the pen tool in Adobe Illustrator to be used for print and for a Greeting Card. Apply color in Photoshop.
New Tools/Vocabulary
Illustrator (Pen tool, path, anchor point, handle, direct selection tool, selection tool, stroke, line weight)
Photoshop (Paintbrush, magic wand, color swatch)
Steps:
1. Start by reading the clicking the link below to read the following article....
History of the Day of the Dead & the Sugar Skull Tradition
2. Begin a blog post entitled "sugar skull" discussing some of the design work you would like to include, why you chose it, and what colors you may use.
DO NOT SAY "I chose it because it's pretty" or "I chose it because I like it." (Each symbol usually means something. Ex. marigolds symbolize the pathway from this world to the after life. Crosses are symbolic of the Christian faith.)
3. Using illustrator, design half of the skull outline including one eye, half of the nose, and half of the teeth. You may use a drawing or this picture of a skull to help with the base. (Just right click the image and save to your Student # folder)
4. Continue working with small designs on half of the face, enclose any portion of the design that you would like to be in color
5. When finished, select all of your work, copy + paste, and flip to create a full skull, adjust where necessary and join paths.
6. Apply color using the paintbrush in Photoshop. I would like to see some fading from light to dark in some areas. If time allows, you may add extra design work to your skull depending on your creativity and skill level. Check with me first.
7. Post finished work to blog within original blog post and add a short reflection
